Therapy / Class: Biologically Active form of Vitamin D3
Mechanism of Action:
Cholecalciferol Biologically Active form of Vitamin D3, plays a crucial role in maintaining calcium and phosphate homeostasis in the body. It is synthesized in the skin upon exposure to sunlight or obtained through dietary sources. Once in the body, cholecalciferol undergoes hydroxylation in the liver to form 25-hydroxycholecalciferol and subsequently in the kidneys to form the biologically active 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol).
The primary mechanism of action of cholecalciferol involves its binding to the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in target cells, such as those in the intestines, bones, and kidneys. Activation of the VDR by calcitriol facilitates the absorption of calcium and phosphate in the intestines, promoting their incorporation into bone mineral and preventing bone resorption.
Beyond its classical role in bone metabolism, cholecalciferol has immunomodulatory effects and influences cellular differentiation and proliferation. Adequate vitamin D levels are essential for overall health, and deficiencies can lead to conditions like rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Supplementation and sufficient sunlight exposure are common strategies to maintain optimal cholecalciferol levels in the body.
