Therapy / Class: Sedative-Hypnotics / Melatonin Agonist
Mechanism of Action:
It is a Melatonin Agonist. It works by increasing GABA activity, which is a chemical messenger in the brain acting as a natural nerve-calming agent, thereby inducing sleep.
Indications:
- Insomnia: Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep
- Procedural Sedation:Mainly used in children for procedural sedation, a technique to manage the pain and anxiety while performing diagnostic/therapeutic procedures.
Dosage & Administration:
30-50mg/kg as single dose, orally. Doses upto 10mg/kg used for level 4 sedation before doing procedures.
