Therapy/Class: Antibiotic / 1st Generation Cephalosporin
Mechanism of Action:
- Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis.
- It works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to the disruption of bacterial cell wall integrity, resulting in cell lysis and death.
Indications:
- Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., tonsillitis, pharyngitis).
- Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., cellulitis, abscesses).
- Urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, pyelonephritis).
- Genitourinary Tract Infections
- Otitis Media
- Bone Infections
Dosage & Administration:
For Pediatric Patients (Over 1 Year of Age):
Daily dose: 25 to 50 mg/kg/day, divided into equal doses, for 7 to 14 days.
