Therapy / Class: Anti-Helmintic / Anti Parasitic Agent/ Benzimidazole Class
Spectrum of Coverage: Active against the larval forms of organism:
- Echinococcus granulosus
- Taenia solium
Mechanism of Action:
It works by inhibiting protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit & directly preventing the formation of bacterial protein. On a molecular level, chloramphenicol inhibits the attachment of transfer RNA to the A site on the 50S ribosome.

- Hydatid Cyst Disease
- Neurocysticercosis
- Cysticercosis
- Ascariasis (Roundworm Infection)
- Capillariasis
- Secondary Treatment of Cutaneous Larva Migrans
- Microsporidiosis & Secondary Microsporidiosis Prophylaxis
- Strongyloidiasis
- Trichinosis
- Enterobiasis (Pinworm Infection)
- Hookworm Infection
- Trichuriasis (Whipworm Infection)
- Giardiasis
Dosage & Administration:
- Hydatid Cyst Disease: 15mg/kg/day orally given in 2 divided doses (Max: 800mg/day) for 28 days
followed by a 14-day drug-free period. Repeat for 2 more cycles. - Neurocysticercosis: 15mg/kg/day (Max: 1,200mg/day) orally in 2 divided doses for 10 to 14 days
combined with praziquantel and corticosteroids. - Cysticercosis: 15mg/kg/day orally given in 2 divided doses (Max: 800mg/day) for 8 to 30 days.
- Ascariasis (Roundworm Infection): 400mg orally as a single dose.
- Capillariasis (Children 2 years and older): 200mg orally twice daily for 10 days.
- Cutaneous Larva Migrans: 5mg/kg/day orally for 3 days.
- Microsporidiosis: 7.5mg/kg/dose (Max: 400mg/dose) orally twice daily for 7 days.
- Strongyloidiasis: 400mg orally twice daily for 7 days.
- Trichinosis: 400 mg orally twice daily for 8 to 14 days.
- Enterobiasis (Pinworm Infection): Age 2 to 17 years: 400mg orally as a single dose; repeat dose in
2 weeks & Age 1 year: 200 to 400mg orally as a single dose; repeat dose in 2 weeks. - Hookworm Infection: 400mg orally as a single dose.
- Giardiasis: 10 mg/kg/dose (Max: 400mg/dose) orally once daily for 5 days.
