Therapy / Class: Antibacterial / 1st Generation Cephalosporin Antibiotics
Spectrum of Coverage:
Gram-positive bacteria: Active against β-haemolytic streptococci; staphylococci, including coagulase positive, coagulase negative.
- Staphylococcus aureus (methicillin-susceptible isolates only)
- Streptococcus pneumoniae (penicillin-susceptible isolates)
- Streptococcus pyogenes
Gram-negative bacteria
- Escherichia coli
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Moraxella catarrhalis
- Proteus mirabilis Spirochetes
Mechanism of Action:
Bactericidal action shown by inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis
Indications:
- Respiratory Tract Infections
- Otitis Media
- Skin & Soft Tissue Infections
- Bone & Joint Infections
- Genito-Urinary Infections
- Dental Infections
Dosage & Administration:
Otitis Media: 75 to 100mg/kg in equally divided doses every 6 hours
In Severe Infections: 50 to 100mg/kg may be administered in equally divided doses
All Other Indications: 25 to 50mg/kg given in equally divided doses
