Mechanism of Action:

Amoxycillin: It exhibits bactericidal action against susceptible organisms during the stage of active multiplication. It acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide by acting on Penicillin Binding Proteins on Bacterial Cell Wall.

Clavulanic Acid: Itis a beta-lactamstructurally related to the penicillins, possesses the ability to inactivate some beta-lactamase enzymes commonly found inmicro-organisms resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins. It has good activityagainst the clinically important plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases frequently responsible fortransferred drug resistance.

The formulation of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from degradation by some beta lactamase enzymes and extends the antibiotic spectrum of amoxicillinto include many bacteria normally resistant to amoxicillin.
