Mechanism of Action:

It competes with histamine for H1-receptor sites on the effector cell surface. Blockade of H1-receptors also suppresses the formation of edema, flare, and pruritus that result from histaminic activity. The sedative properties of hydroxyzine occur at the subcortical level of the CNS & this effect may be dose related. It also has some antiemetic actions secondary to its central anticholinergic actions.

Indications:

  • Treatment of pruritus due allergic conditions, such as chronic urticaria, atopic dermatitis, or contact dermatitis, and histamine-mediated pruritus.
  • Treatment of Nausea/Vomiting
  • Treatment of Post-operative Nausea/Vomiting (PONV)
  • Prophylaxis of Post-operative Nausea/Vomiting (PONV)
  • For the short-term treatment of anxiety, tension, and psychomotor agitation in conditions of emotional stress

Dosage & Administration:

  • Children 1 to 5 years weighing 40 kg or less: 50 mg/day PO in 3 to 4 divided doses as needed.
  • Children 1 to 5 years weighing more than 40 kg: 50 mg/day PO in 3 to 4 divided doses as needed.
  • Children and Adolescents 6 to 17 years: 50 to 100 mg/day PO in 3 to 4 divided doses as needed.

A maximum of 2 mg/kg/day is recommended.
