Spectrum of Coverage:
Aerobic Gram-positive microorganisms
- Staphylococcus aureus (methicillin-susceptible strains)
- Streptococcus pneumoniae (penicillin-susceptible strains)
- Streptococcus pyogene
Aerobic Gram-negative microorganisms
- Citrobacter (diversus) koseri
- Enterobacter aerogenes
- Escherichia coli
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Proteus mirabilis
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Mechanism of Action:
Bactericidal at concentrations equal to or slightly greater than inhibitory concentrations. It inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV & DNA gyrase (both of which are type II topoisomerases), enzymes required for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.
Indications:
- Typhoid Fever
- Multidrug-Resistant Uncomplicated Typhoid Fever
- Gastro Intestinal Infections
- Acute Otitis Media
- Urinary Tract Infection
- Bubonic or Pharyngeal Plague
- Pneumonic or Septicemic Plague
- Plague Prophylaxis (Pre & Post Exposure)
Dosage & Administration:
Typhoid Infections & Multidrug-Resistant Uncomplicated Typhoid Fever: 15 to 30mg/kg/day orally divided twice daily (Max: 400mg/dose) for 5 to 10 days.
Plague Infections:
Pre-Plague -Exposure Prophylaxis: 7.5mg/kg/dose (Max: 400mg/dose) orally every 12 hours until 48 hours after the last perceived exposure as an alternative therapy.
Post Plague -Exposure Prophylaxis: 7.5mg/kg/dose (Max: 400mg/dose) orally every 12 hours for 7 days as an alternative therapy.
Pneumonic or Septicemic Plague: 7.5mg/kg/dose (Max: 400mg/dose) orally every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days as an alternative therapy.
